WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Here's a partial list of Feedback opportunities from my various newsletters.  If you haven't had a chance to respond on one or more of these issues, please feel free to do so by phone or email.

october '07:  restaurants

An ongoing complaint in old Corona del Mar concerns restaurant noise and parking.  I am hosting a town hall meeting to discuss these issues with residents. Share your thoughts and concerns.

SEptember '07:  more on parking

A thriving commercial area is good for the city, but in areas like CdM where there is virtually no buffer between residential and commercial, it leads to friction . . .The Economic Development Committee is leading the effort to find a city-wide solution. Your ideas are welcome.

august '07:  cdm branch library

. . . There is a plan to relocate the Corona del Mar branch to the Oasis as part of the new building. As envisioned, it would be geared for adults,

especially seniors, and eliminate the children’s section.  What do you think about this proposal?

august '07:  trees

I don’t know how everyone else feels, but I have palm tree fatigue. I think we’ve overdone it in the last few years, particularly as they don’t provide shade or much bird habitat. I don’t want to change out things that are already planted, but I’m hoping to persuade the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission to agree to some new choices for the district.  How do you feel about a change?

June '07:  big corona concession

Some people think we should upgrade the menu offering closer to a traditional restaurant; others want to stay with what we’ve had–burgers and snacks and beach toys. I welcome your thoughts.

MARCH 2007 QUESTION - CITY'S WI-FI PROJECT

The city is considering a city-wide wi-fi network and has gotten proposals from a half-dozen companies. There has been concern expressed from a few residents. These focus on health and parental control issues.  I’d like to hear whether you think such a network is a great opportunity or whether you share those concerns or have others.

"THAT'S DEBATABLE"

From time to time, the Daily Pilot asks Council Members a topical question.  I will recap what was asked and answered here.

Daily Pilot:  3/15/07
"Newport Beach City Council finance committee members have said they want to take a closer look at why the city's operating costs have jumped along with recent spikes in revenue. As the city's 2007-08 budget is being drawn up, the council will have to consider which new projects and programs should get taxpayers' dollars. What, if anything, should the council do to rein in city spending, both now and over the long term?"

Nancy Gardner's Response

"One of the biggest problems in controlling expenses is inadequate planning. Although there will always be unforeseen contingencies, establishing clear priorities for the upcoming year which the council will be doing this month, is a critical first stop in managing expenses. It is also important to look beyond 12 months to understand the long-term impact of employee pensions, infrastructure needs, and the like to the city's financial health and factor those costs into both short and long-term planning."
